A Doily Rug for My Sister

My sister saw some doily rugs on Etsy or Pinterest, made from tshirts or that tshirt yarn and asked me if I could make one. I tried to find the yarn for a while, but it’s a little hard to come by and when I did find it, the tiny rug would be very expensive, so I set out to try to figure out how to still make it and be practical. I ran across 60″ wide jersey knit fabric at Joann’s and about 9 yards at 40% off, so I thought I was pretty clever! My total used yardage was 8.5 yards, so maybe I will make one of my sons a laundry bag with the rest. Then set off to find a simple coaster or small doily pattern. This one is from Decorative Crochet, May 2000. Out of print, but I get mine in Ebay or Etsy – LOVE these books.

Anyway, to have one consecutive strip for the whole project, the fabric was cut from fold up to the selvages, but not all the way through. I love the results, but I would never make one again. I feel like I gained so much muscle making this and working with a whole bolt plus a very heavy project, it chained me to a table for a week. I enjoy knowing she’ll like it though, so I can’t wait to mail it.

It turned out beautifully but I can see how it can tire your hands.
